How the designation system works

Status Modified Mission Basic Mission Vehicle Type Design Number Series Letter Nickname
Status of the aircraft(Grounded, in planning, experimental, etc.) Mission that the aircraft is not designed for, but can accomplish Mission that the aircraft is designed to do Type of vehicle(Lighter than air, helicopter, etc. Number of the aircraft with the same mission as another, supposed to be in order of when they were designed, but not usually followed. Example:f-117 was developed before the f-35 Seperate modification for the same plane that makes it better suited. Example:A10C tank killer is better suited for ground assaults The name given to the aircraft so that it can be identified more easily. Instead of saying F/A 18, you could say "Super hornet".
